While Amazon does update their Top 100 Bestselling Smartphones list frequently, one handset that is permanently in the top ten is the Galaxy S III. And the 16 GB Galaxy S III running on the Sprint 4G LTE system was recently spotted in the number four spot on that respected and often referenced list. As the largest retailer in the world, and one of the top online destinations for smartphone buyers, the Amazon bestseller list gives you a quick sentiment of the general smartphone buying public.
The 16 GB Sprint Galaxy S III 4G Android smartphone runs the 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system, and is discounted all the way down to $0.01 on contract at Amazon. There is no doubt that the “nearly free” price tag has something to do with the handset’s current sales rank, but the award-winning Galaxy S III is widely regarded as one of the most capable smartphones as well. The Galaxy S III beat out the Apple iPhone and others when it was bestowed the Best Smartphone of the Year award at the 2013 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain in February.
This is the second year in a row in which a Galaxy S smartphone accomplished that feat, with the Galaxy S II narrowly beating out the iPhone last year. The handset launched on the Sprint 4G LTE system in June of last year, and Sprint has since built that nationwide network to over 58 major markets in the United States. As a slim and light smartphone weighing 4.70 ounces (133 g) and measuring just 0.34 inches (8.6 mm) in thickness, the handset is thinner and lighter than other phones with the same size screen.
The screen in question measures 4.80 inches and is protected by a scratch resistant layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 2. Overall resolution on the True HD display runs 720 x 1,280 pixels, and that is delivered at 306 pixels per inch. More than 16 million colors are used to render visual displays on the screen, which can be manipulated by capacitive, multitouch gestures. The 16 GB Galaxy S III delivers a 2,100 mA battery, and is capable of up to 9.20 hours of talk time from a full battery charge.
The rear facing camera on board the Galaxy S III for Sprint is capable of simultaneous HD video and image capture, delivers a special effects package, and is excellent in low light situations thanks to a built-in LED flash and back illuminated sensor (BSI). Video is recorded at the rate of 1,080P HD resolution, and the front facing chat cam is also capable of video calls. The handset’s hardware package is anchored by a dual core 1.5 GHz CPU that is part of the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 system chip powering the phone. A 32 GB model is also available, and the Galaxy S III delivers 2.0 GB of RAM memory.
