nokiaeossmartphoneFinish smartphone manufacturer Nokia learned a lot from their award-winning 808 PureView. The handset picked up the coveted “Best New Mobile Handset, Device or Tablet” award at last year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, but didn’t really go on to do much in the mobile marketplace after that. Much of the reason for the lack of popularity and sales success for the 808 was the lackluster Symbian operating system which Nokia used to power the handset.

Nokia has since parted ways with Symbian, and crawled into bed with Microsoft as an operating system partner for many of their smartphones. The Windows Phone 8 operating system is already present on multiple Nokia smartphones, and will power the upcoming PureView smartphone that is slated to debut at this year’s MWC, held from February 25 to 28. The main feature generating a lot of buzz on the upcoming Nokia PureView is the 41 megapixel camera the device will deliver.

This Lumia PureView handset with massively megapixeled camera will reportedly be named the EOS, and while Nokia has scheduled an announcement for the device at MWC, there is not even a hint of a possible release date, retail price or availability at this point. The PureView technology is currently in place on the Nokia flagship smartphone, the Lumia 920, and that handset delivers a respectable 8.7 megapixel camera. The 41 megapixel Nokia smartphone camera actually debuted on the failed 808 at last year’s MWC.

Extreme megapixels do not always guarantee extremely good resolution in videos and snapshots. And in the case of the astonishing 41 megapixels in this Nokia smartphone camera, that powerful sensor is instead designed to combine up to 7 pixels into 1 single pixel, thereby eliminating unwanted “visual noise” and deliver excellent low light capability. The camera defaults to 5 megapixels, but can optionally be set as high as 38 megapixels.
The 41 megapixel snapper on the Nokia 808 PureView would probably have been more of a success were it not for the average to poor performance delivered by the Symbian OS.

Because of that weak operating system, the camera simply did not get into the hands of many smartphone shoppers. Nokia is wise to reintroduce their powerful camera technology on a smartphone run by the Windows Phone 8 operating system, and we will be sure to follow up with any news or updates out of MWC regarding this and other smartphone revelations.
