The arrival of the HTC Evo 4G LTE Android smartphone on the Sprint wireless network actually occurred on June 2, but that handset ran on Sprint’s 3G system while that wireless service provider completed the construction of their 4G LTE network. The speedy 4G LTE wireless service launched on July 15, and Sprint is extending and adding to the coverage area in the US monthly. The handset delivers Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) 4.0.3 operating system out-of-the-box, with the HTC Sense 4.0 user interface overlay accepting multitouch gestures to navigate the handset.
The HTC Evo 4G LTE is currently available starting at $79 at select online retailers.
Measuring 5.31 x 2.71 x 0.35 inches (134.8 x 68.9 x 8.9 mm) and weighing 4.73 ounces (134 g) the HTC Evo 4G LTE is slim and light. The 4.7 inch Super IPS LCD2 capacitive touchscreen delivers visuals in more than 16 million colors and offers easy hands-free video and movie viewing with the built-in kickstand. Overall display resolution runs at the high end of the 4G smartphone marketplace at 720 x 1,280 pixels, as does the pixel density of 312 pixels per inch. A protective layer of Corning Gorilla Glass offers scratch resistance and glare reduction.
The 2,000 mA battery on the Evo 4G LTE handset delivers 7.50 hours of talk time from a single charge, and continuing in the hardware package is the Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon microchip suite which powers the handset. That chip package centers around the dual core Krait central processor that has been clocked at 1.5 GHz, and benefits from a separate Adreno 225 GPU that handles all graphics processing. 1.0 GB of RAM system memory is on board and 16 GB of data storage are built-in. The on board microSD slot also provides microSDHC support for cards up to 32 GB in size.
That handset recently was dropped in price to $79 with a standard new two-year activation and data plan at select retailers, and the rear mounted 8.0 megapixel camcorder delivers simultaneous HD video and image recording, an F/2.0 lens which captures 40% more light than the F/2.4 lenses found on most other smartphones, and high resolution video recording at 1,080P HD. Video is recorded in stereo sound, and snapshots are taken in just 0.7 seconds. A front facing 1.3 megapixel chat cam is also present, and the multimedia package on board the HTC Evo 4G LTE includes the full range Beats Audio sound system, a built-in music player, YouTube video player and Stereo FM radio with RDS. You can purchase the HTC Evo 4G LTE starting at $79.
