Smartphone manufacturers are not always successful in attempting to deliver a central design focus. However, Motorola did an outstanding job in taking the skinny Droid Razr 4G and improving on its less than admirable battery life. Verizon Wireless 4G LTE customers loved the super skinny design of that original Droid Razr, but wanted less dependence on chargers. Verizon looked the phone over, decided to stick with the exact same hardware and software, but improve the battery size, as well as battery conservation efforts. They were successful in their attempt, and the Droid Razr MAXX 4G Android smartphone delivers more talk time and video playback than any other mobile handset. The Droid Razr Maxx is available for as little as $99 at select retailers.
The Droid Razr MAXX offers up to 21.5 hours of talk time or 15.0 hours of video playback from a single charge of its oversized 3,300 mA cell. That battery is a full 85% larger in size and storage capacity than the one found on the original Droid Razr 4G, but is still in keeping with the thin design of the Droid Razr name. That handset is only 0.35 inches (8.99 mm) thick, making it slimmer than the average 4G smartphone. The handset is also versatile, as it can port into the optional Lapdock 100 Motorola accessory and transform into a 10.1 inch laptop with full keyboard and track pad. The Razr MAXX can also snap into the optional Motorola HD Station, serving as the hub for a high definition multimedia center, or connect to a keyboard, mouse and monitor and perform as a desktop PC.
Powering the 4G LTE capable smartphone and its versatile PC options is a Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 microchip package which has at its core a dual core Cortex A9 central processing unit that benefits by the presence of a separate chip that focuses entirely on graphics processing, a PowerVR SGX540 GPU. The handset comes out-of-the-box with 1.0 GB of RAM system memory and 16 GB of storage is built-in, and the Droid Razr MAXX ships with an additional, removable 16 GB microSD card. That 32 GB of out-of-the-box storage is the most found on any smartphone.
The Super AMOLED Advanced display runs 4.3 inches with a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels, and a protective layer of Corning Gorilla Glass overlays the screen. Visuals are presented in more than 16 million colors, and the 8.0 megapixel camcorder on the back of the handset records video in stereo sound at 1,080P HD resolution. The front facing chat cam can also provide portrait snapshots and video call capabilities, and a YouTube video player has been pre-installed and is ready for use out-of-the-box.
