Back in the day, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was still the latest iteration of the Google mobile operating system and during that time, manufacturers were already rearranging their schedules to include the development of the ICS update for the handsets in their respective lineups. Since then, the ICS update has been rolled out to a couple of devices one after the other but among the handsets who were rather late in getting the Android 4.0 refresh is the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx.

The Motorola Droid Razr Maxx is currently available for purchase starting at $99.

The current Motorola flagship device is one heavy-hitting handset and packs all the bells and whistles one could ask for in a smartphone. In fact, the handset boasts of having the longest battery life among the handsets included in Verizon’s lineup of Android-powered devices, thanks to its massive 3300 mAh power pack. Sad to say, the road that the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx travelled to get upgraded to ICS was not an easy one.

When Motorola first came out with its ICS plans back in February, the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx was still in the Evaluation and Planning stage of its ICS development. This, at that time, simply meant that users of the handset still had a lot of waiting to do before their respective handsets get upgraded to ICS. A couple of months later, Motorola came out with its updated ICS plans and the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx was already in the Development stage. Not only that, the manufacturer confirmed that the ICS update for the handset will hit the airwaves before the end of June. Before this was to happen, Motorola even released a couple of videos of the handset in its ICS-laden glory to give users of the handset an idea as to what they can expect once the update finally lands on their devices.

And now that the ICS update has finally hit the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx, what can we now expect from the Motorola flagship device?

For one, the boring old lock screen of the handset was sent out to pasture and in its place is the new lock screen of the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx that lets you launch the text messaging functions, phone and camera of the handset. With ICS under its hood, the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx now has the capability of creating folders to reduce the clutter in its home screens.

The camera of the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx didn’t get much love from ICS but there were still a couple of enhancements on the application. The handset is now capable of burst mode but it still needs to be enabled manually. In addition to that, speak to type capability has also been enabled courtesy of ICS. So long as the handset has a data connection, you can easily fire off texts or emails even while on the go.

The most notable improvement that ICS brought to the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx however is the improved performance of the handset. After the update, the handset feels a whole lot faster and snappier. It has also become a lot more responsive than it was before. The most important aspect of the ICS update for the handset though is that Motorola has done away much of MotoBLUR so despite the presence of the UI overlay, ICS on the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx is as close as it can get to the stock Android experience seen in the Samsung Galaxy Nexus when it first came out.  You can buy the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx starting at $99.
