The BlackBerry Z10 is off to a much better start than analysts expected. Most industry experts expected around 900,000 units to be sold by this time, but more than 1 million units of the new BlackBerry smartphone have shipped so far. The handset has been available in the US on the AT&T network for less than a week, and just recently appeared on Verizon. The Amazon Wireless store currently shows the Verizon BlackBerry Z10 retailing at a $50 discount, a price of $149 on contract.
Aside from the 1 million units of the handset that has been sold to retail units online and off, a commercial order of 1 million units was placed just a couple of weeks ago. BlackBerry has to be pleased with the early sales figures, and it appears that at this stage, the acceptance of the BlackBerry 10 operating system and BlackBerry Z10 handset is market-wide. The Z10 is an entirely touchscreen driven handset, foregoing the familiar physical keyboard found on previous BlackBerries.
Pixel density on the handset is extremely high, as is resolution, and the Z10 delivers double the RAM memory found on the average smartphone. BlackBerry has made the phone thin, and it measures just 0.35 inches (9.0 mm). The handset weighs 4.85 ounces (130 g), light for a phone with such a large screen. The display in question is a 4.2 inch model, which delivers more than 16 individual colors at the rate of 356 pixels over every inch of display space. That creates an overall resolution of 768 x 1,280 pixels, and standard multitouch, capacitive gestures are supported.
BlackBerry has included a standard sized 1,800 mA battery, and a full charge of that cell delivers above average talk time at 10.0 hours. Standby battery power lasts approximately 13.0 days. A Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 system chip handles device operations, built around a dual core 1.5 GHz CPU. The handset offers 16 GB of built-in data storage space, and a microSD slot for expansion, as well as 2.0 GB of RAM system memory.
The BlackBerry Z10 is available in white or black, and offers NFC wireless support out-of-the-box. The handset also comes equipped with a YouTube video player, built-in music player and mobile Wi-Fi hotspot capability. The camera built into the back of the BlackBerry Z10 is an 8.0 megapixel model with built-in LED flash and f/2.2 lens, making it excellent for low light situations. Video capture runs 1,920 x 1,080 pixels (1,080P HD resolution), and the phone also offers a front facing chat cam which can be used to place and receive video calls.
