When Google announced Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich late last year, Samsung also released the Samsung Galaxy Nexus to coincide with the unveiling of what back then was the latest version of the Google mobile operating system. Being a Google developer device, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus already ran ICS for its operating system and was the handset that was utilized by Google to show off Android 4.0 to the world at that time. In addition to that, the handset is also assured of getting first dibs on whatever update Google will be releasing in the future thereby making it the smartphone of choice among the hardworking fellows in the developer communities.

In fact, for a time, a lot of the smartphone-buying population considered the Samsung Galaxy Nexus as the best Android-powered smartphone in the market despite the fact that certain portions of its specs sheet is mediocre at best. The  only reason for this is because of the fact that the handset was the only device in the market at that time already running ICS for its default operating system and thereby the only device that can give users a pure Google / Android experience for that matter.

And now that Google has already unveiled Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the latest iteration of the Android operating system for mobile devices, users of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus were already expecting to get the update that will crank their handsets to Jelly Bean. At the time of the Jelly Bean announcement, Google confirmed that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus will also get updated to this version and promised a before end of July rollout to the handset.

If you happen to have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus for your mobile weapon of choice, then consider yourself lucky. Google has announced that it has already started the rollout of the Android 4.1.1 Jelly bean update to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and it isn’t even mid-July yet. Once the update has been applied to the handset, it will crank up the software version of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus to Android 4.1 with a JRO03C build number, incidentally the same version of the operating system that was unleashed on the Google Nexus 7 tablet.

Should you be able to update your Samsung Galaxy Nexus to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, you will notice that there are still no changes on the way the Google Search app returns results – it will still return local search results for that matter. However, the handset will not be able to download Adobe Flash Player (which will be discontinued) from the Google Play store.

In addition to that, the handset will also get the Jelly Bean features shown off at Google I/O such as Google Now, Project Butter along with the improvements to the homescreen, keyboard, notifications and camera of the handset among others.  Buy the Samsung Galaxy Nexus starting at one penny.

  1. if the OTA hasn’t been pushed yet, u can force your G-Nex HSPA+ to manually retrieve the 140MB+ file.

perform a factory reset. after the reboot, skip the Google account sign-in prompt. connect the device to a WLAN. access the device settings panel and manually check for system updates. Jelly Bean v4.1.1 should appear for download.

ICS was a HUGE improvement (puts gingerbread to shame), but Jelly Bean raises the bar waaaay up. it’s that good.
