Back in the day, the Samsung Galaxy S III was one of the most powerful and most capable handsets available in the smartphone market. This is because the superphone was the flagship device of the Korean smartphone and tablet manufacturer last year and with this status came the fact that the handset has an impeccable resume made up of fire-breathing components under the hood. The handset was also the epitome of popularity with its manufacturer managing to sell 50 million units of the handset since its release back in the latter parts of May last year.

However, the Samsung Galaxy S III is just about ready to quietly fade into the night and head on over to retirement because its successor, the equally formidable but obviously more powerful Samsung Galaxy S IV, has already reached officialdom after its recent unveiling a couple of days back. Despite this, the once flagship device of the Korean electronics giant is still as venerable as ever and more sales of the handset is expected because its price point will surely drop especially once the Samsung Galaxy S IV hits the shelves and is already available for mass consumption.

But before we write off the Samsung Galaxy S III, we recently heard from a source that it will get a new lease on life once Google releases Android 5.0, its upcoming version of its mobile operating system and which our smartphone-crazed brethren lovingly refer to as Key Lime Pie. According to our source, Google is set to unveiled Key Lime Pie (if it will be called that, for that matter) at the annual Google I/O developer conference on May 15.

In addition to that, our source has reason to believe that Key Lime Pie will also make its way to most of the more capable handsets currently available in the market today and this includes the Samsung Galaxy S III. No confirmation has been released by Samsung about this matter at the moment but with the impressive components under the hood of its once flagship device, we wouldn’t be surprised if it gets updated to Key Lime Pie (well, after the Samsung Galaxy S IV gets a taste of that Android version, of course).

As for the Samsung Galaxy S III, the handset may already be on its way out but it still packs some impressive firepower in its internals. The circuitry of the handset is built around its QualComm MSM8960 SnapDragon chipset which essentially brings into play a dual-core 1.5 GHz Krait processor and a whopping 2 GB of RAM. This combination work together in delivering the computing power needed by the handset to ensure that its performance is always snappy and buttery smooth.

The handset can be had in a 16GB and a 32GB variant in terms of storage capacity but the internal memory of the handset can easily be expanded using its microSD card slot if needed. As for its display, the Samsung Galaxy S III sports a 4.8-inch SuperAMOLED HD panel with a 1280 x 720 resolution while its dual-shooter configuration includes a rear 8MP shooter and a front 1.9MP video call and self-portrait snapper.
