The latest variant of the iPhone, the 4S seems to be going great guns for Apple as a survey by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners has revealed that 36% of new iPhone 4S users have graduated to the device from other platforms like Android and Blackberry.

One close analysis, the figures reveal that 50% of those who jumped ship to the iPhone 4S were previously using a Blackberry. Among the remaining, nearly 40% were Android users and 10% were former Palm users. Among all the users surveyed, it is interesting to note that new iPhone users comprised only 21% of the people surveyed, while a whopping 43% of iPhone 4S users upgraded from an older iOS device. Topping all these figures are the 42% of users who actually opted out of a contract and paid the termination fees in order to get themselves an iPhone 4S.

After the release of the iPhone 4S, Apple slashed the prices of the older iPhone models, especially the iPhone 4. However, this didn’t affect the sales of the new model and nearly 90% of the surveyed users opted for an iPhone 4S. The fact that price doesn’t really affect the enthusiasm of iPhone owners is supported by the fact that 21% of them have the highest priced 64GB version.

When the specifications of the iPhone 4S were first made public, there were concerns that the company might not be able to maintain strong market demand due to the incremental nature of the upgrade, but Apple belied these concerns by announcing that the 4S had opened to record sales after launch, even for the high end models. Furthermore, at the time of launch only 18% of new buyers were migrating from other platforms, but this figure has increased to 36% in a short span of time.

In addition to this survey, several interesting studies about Apple were carried out by CIRP. They reveal that most Apple owners start off with an iPod or iPhone and then go on to buy other Apple products like the iPad and the Mac. Further, users who upgraded to an iPhone 4S from an older iPhone variant were more likely to buy the entire range of Apple products such as Apple TV, AirPort etc. Apple is slated to release its December quarterly earnings report and projections of iPhone sales are at nearly 30 million, which is an 83% increase over the sales in the same quarter of last year; capping off another successful year for the company, and this time at the expense of other platforms.

  1. It’s exciting to see the new possibilities of technology for recovering lost or stolen goods. As you state, this is probably not the norm, but still incredible that someone recovered their phone with the iCloud technology.
