In today’s smartphone world particularly in the Android platform, it seems that everybody is waiting for his handset to get a taste of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the latest iteration of the Google mobile operating system. Though this might be the case, there are some of our smartphone-crazed brethren who are still waiting (and have been doing so for a couple of months now) for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to make its way over to their handsets. And the sad thing about this is that these same handsets waiting for ICS to land are very capable devices in the first place and should have problems specs-wise in running ICS under the hood.
One such device is the Sony Xperia Ion which AT&T announced in April and subsequently launched in June. Although packing impressive components under the hood and bringing even more impressive capabilities to the table, the handset failed to leave its mark in the smartphone competition because of the fact that is was still running Android 2.3 Gingerbread for its operating system while the other bad boys of the smartphone playground are already on ICS.
Just last week, reports came in the several users of the handset received updates that cranked up their Android version to Ice Cream Sandwich but the update was only rolled out to a small number of users. Today, everything changes as AT&T comes out in the open to confirm that the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Sony Xperia Ion is now officially available.
Though not the latest iteration of the Android operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich is still a big improvement over Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the operating system of the Sony Xperia Ion when it launched and the same operating system that users of the handset got stuck with and had to endure for the longest time.
The ICS update will bring a lot of goodies and treats to the Sony Xperia Ion such as a new user interface, enhanced notifications, a redesigned user interface, an improved browser, Face Unlock and a whole lot more. AT&T also confirmed that the ICS update for the Sony Xperia Ion will bring faster 4G LTE and Wi-Fi connectivity to the handset. It will also enhance the handset’s Exchange Active Sync and improce the way the device handles switching from portrait to landscape modes.
As for the Sony Xperia Ion, the handset relies on its QualComm MSM8260 SnapDragon chipset to supply power to its operation. The computing power required by the handset on the other hand is generated by its dual-core 1.5 GHz Scorpion processor and 1GB of RAM. The handset comes with 16GB of onboard storage with an option for memory expansion via its microsD card slot while its display measures 4.55 inches and is of the LED-backlit LCD variety with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. its camera department is also very impressive with its 12MP rear shooter and 1.3MP front snapper.
