If you happen to have a Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket 4G for your mobile weapon of choice, you know you have one very capable handset in the palm of your hands. The handset is the LTE-supporting variant of the Samsung Galaxy S II, the once flagship device of the Korean electronics giant from a couple of years back, and is actually one of the first LTE-capable devices released by AT&T back when the carrier’s 4G LTE coverage was still in its early stages.

So you see, the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket 4G is not only a capable handset, it is also a part of Ma Bell’s history. And now, the handset stands to make history again because the much-awaited Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update is now rolling out to the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket 4G. That’s correct people, some nine months after the handset get a taste of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the handset yet again gets another software update love from AT&T this time around getting a taste of the Jelly Bean refresh.

For those interested in giving their handsets a taste of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, don’t waste your time waiting for that notification to let you know if the update has already landed on your device. Don’t mash that Check Now button to no end as well because the update is NOT being rolled out via the usual OTA manner. Rather, it is going out via Samsung Kies so you might want to hook your Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket 4G up to your computer and fire up the Samsung Kies software to get the update process rolling for that matter.

Once applied to the handset, the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update will bring to the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket 4G the following goodies and treats:

  • Google Now with enhanced voice activation
  • Adds Browser bar, Drive Mode, ATT Locker, Mobile Hot Spot, Featured Apps widget as preloaded applications
  • Removes Qik and MSpot applications
  • Improved Call Quality

Going back to the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket 4G, the handset reached official status when its addition to the lineup of AT&T was unveiled back in October of 2011. The handset however only managed to make its debut in the shelves of the wireless provider in November but since then has become one of the more popular offerings of the carrier. Under the hood, the operation of the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket 4G is powered by its QualComm MSM8260 SnapDragon chipset which brings into play a dual-core 1.5 GHz Scorpion processor and a full gigabyte of RAM. The handset has 16GB of internal memory but if this is not enough for your needs, you can make use of its microSD card slot for memory expansion purposes. Display-wise, the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket 4G sports a 4.5-inch SuperAMOLED Plus panel with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels while its camera department features a main 8MP shooter at its back panel and a secondary 2MP snapper at its front bezel.

  1. It would be awesome if Kies would actually work. Battery is at 100% and Kies says battery needs recharged before it can install…. SUCKS!
