The globally successful and popular Samsung Galaxy S III arrived on the AT&T 4G LTE network in the US in late June of 2012. Worldwide to date, all iterations of the Galaxy S III have combined for nearly 50 million units in sales in only 7 months. That is more than the combined sales of all Galaxy S II handsets, which have been available for close to two years now. The handset sports the new Jelly Bean 4.1 operating system, and Samsung has wrapped that with their TouchWiz UX user interface. The 16 GB version retails for around $79 on contract at select retailers like the Amazon Wireless store.
The Samsung Galaxy S III for ATT is available for a reduced sale price now starting at $79.99.
Offered in a wide variety of colors, the handset is slim and light for one with such a large screen and respectable hardware package. The profile is a razor thin 0.34 inches (8.6 mm), and the handset weighs 4.73 ounces (134 g). The Android S Beam wireless data transfer application is supported by the handset’s NFC technology, and popular social networking destinations Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Picasa have been pre-installed. The music player in the AT&T GS III’s multimedia package sorts by album, artist and play lists, and delivers both preset and custom equalizers.
A protective layer of Corning Gorilla Glass overlays the 4.80 inch Super AMOLED display, and the generous 306 pixels per inch give that screen an overall resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels. More than 16 million independent colors are used to process visual displays, and the handset supports standard capacitive, multitouch gestures for navigation. A light sensor automatically adjusts for the proper display brightness, a proximity sensor helps conserve battery life, and the 2,100 mA battery on the GS III offers 8.0 hours of talk time and 8.3 days of standby battery power from a single charge.
Powered by a dual core 1.5 GHz Krait CPU, the Galaxy S III handset also includes an Adreno 225 GPU for graphics processing. The hardware package includes a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 microchip suite, 2.0 GB of RAM memory, and is available in a 32 GB model as well as the 16 GB version reviewed here. A microSD slot has been added, and supports external memory cards up to 64 GB in size.
Like most Android smartphones today, the AT&T Galaxy S III 16 GB model delivers both a rear facing camcorder and front facing chat capable camera. That front camera runs 1.9 megapixels, and can be used for video calls or to take portrait snapshots. Built into the back of the handset is an 8.0 megapixel camera capable of simultaneous HD video and image capture. That rear snapper contains an LED flash and offers features like face and smile detection, autofocus, touch to focus and image stabilization. Video capture runs 1,080P HD.
