As early as last month, it was already reported that there is a possibility that a variant of the Samsung Galaxy S II will be the first Android-powered smartphone in US shores to get updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the form of Sprint’s Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch because it was reported in the past that the wireless carrier is already putting the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the handset under rigorous testing and is nearing release. And with Samsung finally releasing the ICS update for the international version of the Samsung Galaxy S II, the likelihood that the Sprint version of the handset getting first dibs on ICS in US shores became higher.
But that is not to be the case. It was AT&T who won the race for the first carrier to release an ICS update for its handset with today’s announcement of the availability of the update to the latest version of Android for the HTC Vivid 4G. Actually, users of the handset were already able to download the ICS update for the HTC Vivid 4G as early as last week using a dialer workaround but it is just today that AT&T confirmed the availability of the update. With the announcement came the confirmation that Ice Cream Sandwich will also land on the carrier’s own version of the venerable Samsung flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G.
There has been no official word from AT&T as to when the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G can be expected to get its first taste of Ice Cream Sandwich but given the fact that the international version of the handset already has ICS in its circuitry could mean that the wireless provider is not very far from releasing the update to its variant. While waiting for more word on that, let us get reacquainted with the specs sheet of the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G to help pass the time.
The Samsung Galaxy S II 4G is no longer a spring chicken given the fact that AT&T released it back in October of 2011. Despite the handset’s black-slab design, it still manages to give off a classy and elegant look thanks largely to its slim profile in a chassis that measures 126 x 66 x 8.9 mm and tips the scales at 121.9 grams.
Internally , the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G is just as powerful as its international version with its operating system being powered by a Samsung Exynos C210 chipset. This SoC gives the handset a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor clocked at 1.2 GHz in addition to a full gigabyte of RAM. The handset comes with 16GB of internal memory but memory expansion is possible via its microSD card slot. The display of the handset o the other hand is a 4.3-inch SuperAMOLED Plus panel made from Gorilla Glass and comes with an 800 x 480 resolution while its camera department gives the handset a n 8MP rear shooter and a 2MP front-facing webcam.
