The award-winning HTC One X Android smartphone which debuted at the Mobile World Congress this February has finally arrived. The handset was due to launch on May 6th, but was held up, finally beginning to ship on may 23rd. It appears that the wait was well worthwhile, as the handset delivers what is arguably the best all-around feature set in the entire 4G smartphone marketplace, as well as extremely high marks in several individual areas. Online video and camera dedicated website Videomaker even game the handset its 2012 Best of CTIA smartphone blue ribbon for the camera package on board the handset.

The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) operating system and Beats by Dr. Dre audio software package are two highly sought after features in the mobile handset marketplace, and they are both aboard the HTC One X. The 4.7 inch screen is one of the largest in the entire 4G smartphone marketplace, with an extremely high-end resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels, delivered at 312 pixels per inch. Visuals are rendered in more than 16 million colors, and a protective layer of Gorilla Glass overlays the screen. That display is accented by a kickstand which allows for hands-free video viewing.

In the hardware package, the 1,800 mA battery delivers above average talk time for a 4G smartphone, at 8.50 hours from a single charge. Standby time sits at 12.6 days, and 16 GB of user accessible, built-in storage is present, as well as 1.0 GB of RAM system memory. The Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon microchip package on board includes one of the fastest central processors on any smartphone, a dual core 1.5 GHz Krait CPU. An Adreno 225 chip is on board to handle all the graphics duties, and AT&T includes 25 GB of virtual Dropbox storage for the first two years to all HTC One X buyers.

Near Frequency Communications (NFC) wireless retail payment support is available out-of-the-box, as is wireless video out through DLNA technology. Simultaneous video and still shot capture is delivered to the 8.0 megapixel camcorder, and that F2.0 aperture size allows for up to 40% more light, combining with the LED flash for excellent low light camera operation. The HTC One X also delivers a back illuminated sensor (BSI), high dynamic range mode (HDR), autofocus and Geo tagging features, and records video at 1,080P HD resolution. A front facing 1.3 megapixel chat cam joins the camcorder in the camera combo.

  1. Just a clarification. There is no kickstand on any of the HTC One X phones. The HTC Evo 4G LTE which just arrived on Sprint has a kickstand, but they do not use the “One X” branding, although it appears to be “based’ on the One X.
