The latest research data out of Strategy Analytics will probably not startle too many consumer electronics shoppers who are familiar with the current smartphone marketplace operating systems offered. That research shows that Apple and Google have definitely locked up the two top OS spots in the smartphone arena, with an incredible 92% of all global smartphone shipments employing one of those two operating systems last year. But third place in a massive tech field like smartphones is definitely attractive as well to the rest of the OS field.
The Nokia Lumia 920 is available for a reduced sale price now starting at $19.99.
Google is the owner of the popular Android operating systems, and Apple is of course the developer of the iOS platform. Since 2006, BlackBerry, formerly Research in Motion (RIM), has solidly been entrenched in the number three spot for smartphone operating systems. But according to Strategy Analytics research, Microsoft now ranks ahead of BlackBerry in the mobile handset operating system hierarchy, thanks to smartphones like the Nokia Lumia 920 4G.
That handset delivers the Windows Phone 8 operating system, and is the first offering from Nokia with both that Microsoft powered OS and a modern dual core processor. The Nokia Lumia 920 4G is also attractive thanks to its wide range of color options, large 4.5 inch display and 1,280 x 768 pixel resolution. Also the first Windows smartphone from the Finnish manufacturer to offer an HD screen, pixel density runs high at 332 pixels per inch.
But the present overtaking of BlackBerry by Microsoft in the smartphone operating system arena will be short-lived if BlackBerry has anything to say about it. The company has totally changed their outlook, as is evidenced by adopting the name of their smartphone as the company name. The new BlackBerry Z10 handset was recently launched, and delivers an entirely different form factor and outlook, as well as feature set and operating system than previous BlackBerry models.
The Z10 debuts the new BlackBerry 10 operating system, and removes the iconic physical QWERTY keyboard which previous BlackBerry devices were known for. Going fully touchscreen gesture driven, the handset also delivers a large 4.2 inch LCD display. Screen resolution is identical to that of the Windows Phone 8 powered Nokia Lumia 920 4G, and the new BlackBerry delivers an extremely high pixel density, at 356 pixels per inch. In 2013 and moving forward, handsets like the BlackBerry Z10 and the Nokia Lumia 920 4G will dictate whether BlackBerry or Microsoft will control the enviable 3rd most popular position in the smartphone operating system arena.
You can purchase the Lumia 920 at a discounted price tag now starting at $19.99.
