Google released Google Fiber not that long ago and has been getting ready to expand that service to more cities and towns without any competition, but that is about to change. C Spire is the next company in line for the fiber optic internet service and it is going to offer the same speeds as Google once the network starts rolling out. Right now, the company is asking cities and towns to campaign to be the second city that the company looks at for the super high speed internet. The first city will be in Mississippi, according to reports.
C Spire Fiber to the Home service will be available to “any community near an existing fiber route that opens its arms to welcome it.” C Spire will be starting in Mississippi and the company has encouraged community leaders to send in applications to be the next in line once the first city is completed. C Spire said, “the communities that want it the most, and move the quickest,” will get the internet first. Google played the same game and started rolling out its network in Kansas City, then announced that it would be moving along to Austin, Texas and Provo, Utah, since they were two places that wanted to give the technology a try.
C Spire said that it already has the necessary technology and equipment ready to go in order to deploy the fiber optic internet including more than 4,000 miles of fiber cable and another 1,500 miles of cable that is ready to be installed over the next 12 months or more. The company has not released too many details of the new internet and it will be more likely to make official announcement as the new service creeps across the country.
Pricing was also not mentioned, but the company did say that it will be offering the service at “competitive rates”. C Spire did not say that those rates were going to be compared to Google, but right now that is the only other company that has the service available. Offering up gigabit internet is still a new technology and it will be hard to find the service anywhere unless you are lucky enough to live in one of the cities mentioned above. Fiber optic internet has the ability to offer speeds up to 500Mbps to commercial companies like the ones that Verizon services with its FiOS Quantum service.
