Not all of Nokia’s phones possess PureView technology. The coveted technology is only found on the maker’s best cameraphones, among which we find the Lumia 920 from last year. This smartphone wasn’t as capable as its competition, as was proved through the extensive research conducted by several organisations.

However, the Nokia Lumia 925 might just be here to show us that PureView handsets aren’t to be underestimated. The Lumia 925 comes with an 8.7 MP shooter supported by optical image stabilization and six element optics, and is controlled by a horde of software algorithms designed and developed by Nokia’s camera team. If that’s not enough to digest, the phone is also capable of shooting photos at ISO 3200, which comes in handy especially when shooting in low lighting conditions.

So, is Nokia’s flagship phone really as good as it is hyped up to be? A comparison between Samsung Galaxy S4’s 13MP shooter, the HTC One’s 4MP ‘Ultrapixel Camera’, the iPhone 5 with its 8MP shooter and finally the Galaxy Note, also with an 8MP rear camera, should help in determining a winner, as per a test by a team of analysts. Just to add a little spice into the competition, Panasonic’s Lumix GH2 was also thrown into the competition as a standalone device. Getting down to the specifics of the comparison; every photo was scaled to ensure that each photo is only 1920px wide, which is more than sufficient for most needs.

The Nokia Lumia 925 pleased judges with its balanced performance. Despite having accurate exposure and colour representation, the picture shot lacked a little detail. A better level of detail was achieved by the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note without compromising on the colour saturation. The pictures on the iPhone had a warmer tone on the whole, but they were pleasing to the eye nevertheless. As for HTC’s flagship phone, the camera certainly gets the job done, with its almost neutral colour balance.

However, there were some scenes which couldn’t be exposed sufficiently. On a scale of 1-10 different phones could be related with the following ratings. The Samsung Galaxy S4 managed to secure the top spot with an 8 on 10 rating. The same ratings were given to the iPhone and the Note II. The Lumia 925 and the HTC One followed with a rating of 7 on 10. Panasonic’s phone did not fare well against these high end smartphones.
