If you were the largest social networking web 2.0 platform in existence, would you really become too concerned if the newest social networking upstart on the block added a mobile app feature that you didn’t have? You probably would if that social networking upstart was named Google.
Those are the recent developments concerning Facebook and Google, and Facebook has wisely answered the Google+ social network’s Group Chat offering. Messenger for Mobile is a new group chat application designed for iPhones and many other BlackBerry and Android smartphones as well.
The Google+ social network is just a little over a month old, but it’s meteoric acceptance by webizens and those a little put-out with Facebook’s sometimes invasive policies has led to an initial growth more than 10 times that of Facebook’s during its comparable infancy stage. And there is no denying the financial and software power that Google brings to the social network arena. Google+ has already created a stir with applications not found in any of the other social networks.
Basically, the Google+ Huddle group chat application allows you to do just that. You can select a number of other Google+ users and have a group chat as opposed to a one-on-one. But this special feature offered by Google’s social network is available only in Google mobile apps and not on their main website. This is obviously a direct attempt to improve their presence and user acceptance on mobile handsets and devices.
Facebook’s Messenger application performs pretty much the same way. This is only Facebook’s second attempt into the App Store, and they are hoping they released it in enough time to compete with the Google+ first-to-market application. The Facebook Messenger app allows the same group correspondence that the Google+ Huddle offers, but they also offer an optional “location reveal” as well.
And in a smart move by Facebook, your friends and family who don’t have their smartphone on them can still take part in the Messenger interaction, by using traditional SMS messaging instead. A simple confirmation of their mobile smartphone number is all that is required.
In case you were wondering how to get Facebook Messenger, just go to Apple’s App Store, but you must be running iOS 4.0 or later. Facebook Messenger also works on iPod Touch and iPad devices. Android and BlackBerry availability is in the infancy stages and will be rolled out very soon as well.
