Samsung brought along three versions of the new Galaxy Gear smartwatch to the Mobile World Congress event back in February of this year. It was the Galaxy Gear Fit that might have gained the most attention and it was mostly because of the curved AMOLED display. Because of the curved display, everything on it was shown horizontally. At first it might not have been that big of deal, but users were complaining about how annoying that was and it looks like Samsung has listened. It makes sense because horizontal text and things on a wristwatch just does not make things easier for the user.
Samsung released an update for the smartwatch and now, according to reports, the display will support vertical orientation. While the device is being worn, the text, numbers and other data can be placed vertically to make it easier for the user to read. Something that just seems like it should not have got passed the quality control team, but you never know when companies are trying to push products out the door so quickly. At least it was a quick software update that fixed the problem and now users can save themselves from neck strain.
There are a couple of videos posted online showing the differences and how they are both useful in their own way. The main point is that once you have the device on, you are going to want the information stacked over each other for ease of reading. Since the Galaxy Gear Fit is not available to everyone, the update came at just the right time. This does not mean the product is out of the woods, as more consumers get one they odds another snag comes are pretty high.
Samsung also released the Galaxy Gear 2 and the Galaxy Gear 2 Neo on the same day with all of them offering specific things that the other does not. The Gear 2 Neo does not come with a camera, while the Gear 2 does have a 2MP version that can also record in 1080p HD. All three of the watches have a 1Ghz dual-core processor, 4GB of storage and 512MB of RAM. The battery is quite small, as it should be, coming in at only 300mAh, but that should provide an entire day of use depending on what you are using the smartwatch for.
