Samsung Electronics earlier this week announced their third quarter financials for 2012, and the South Korean tech Goliath was able to disclose record-breaking numbers. Driven by sales of the Galaxy S III smartphone, Samsung reported $7.3 billion in operating profits for Q3 2012. A spokesperson for the company claimed that approximately 2/3 of that profit was due to telephones like the Galaxy S III, which recently surpassed the Apple iPhone 4S in popularity and sales in some markets in the United States. The Galaxy S III sold more than 20 million units globally in its first 100 days of availability, according to Samsung’s records.
The Samsung Galaxy S III for Sprint is on sale now starting at 99.99.
We reported last quarter that Samsung had shipped almost two times the number of smartphones worldwide as Apple (50 million as opposed to 26 million for Apple), and in that quarter garnered nearly a third of the entire worldwide mobile handset marketplace, as 176 million total smartphones were shipped globally in Q2 2012 across all manufacturers. In related news, Samsung recently claimed in a court filing in the northern district of California that Apple Inc. French on several of their patented mobile phone design features with their latest handset, the iPhone 5.
This came after Samsung was ordered to pay $1 billion for infringement of specific Apple iPhone designs they were ruled to have copied. However, as news of Apple’s copyright infringement accusations hit the Internet every couple of days, Samsung’s Galaxy S III actually had a sales spike. It seems that the Apple lawsuit had the negative intended effect, and as it turned out helped Samsung produce record sales numbers for Q3.
The handset is now offered by multiple carriers in the United States, and Sprint is one wireless provider that is trying to get a headstart on the competition heading into the upcoming holiday season. Leaked screen shots have appeared on the Internet of Sprint POP showing the best-selling Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone that runs on their 4G LTE system priced at $49 on contract for November 23, Black Friday. No details at this early date if this is a online only or off-line only special, and no confirmation from Sprint has been made.
The handset has become popular with smartphone shoppers thanks to its large screen, powerful processor, double the RAM found on most smartphones and overall feature package. The rear facing 8.0 megapixel camcorder on the Galaxy S III for Sprint provide simultaneous HD image and video capture, and records video in stereo sound at 1,080P HD resolution. The 4.80 inch Super AMOLED display is one of the largest on any smartphone, and the handset is skinny at 0.34 inches (8.6 mm), with an extremely high display resolution at 720 x 1,280 pixels. A 1.5 GHz dual core central processor joins 2.0 GB of RAM system memory and 16 GB of built-in storage on the handset.
