Before the Samsung Galaxy Nexus became the toast of the smartphone-buying population who preferred the Vanila-flavored, stock Android experience in their devices, the Google Nexus S was back then the flagship device of Google and is one of the developer devices that always get first dibs on whatever software updates will be released. And with the recent unveiling of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as the latest iteration of the Android mobile operating system, it was made known that Jelly Bean is also expected to be made available to the Google Nexus S.
A couple of days back, Vodafone Australia, a wireless provider from down under announced that the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update will be made available to the Google Nexus S come July 19 at 1:00 pm AEST. Sad to say, the carrier came out with an announcement that the update for the handset has been postponed because it did not meet some Australian regulatory requirements associated with emergency calls. Unfortunately, the timeline as to when the update will resume was not mentioned by the carrier so users still hanging on to their Google Nexus S handsets had no choice but to go back to waiting for the update to land on their handsets.
It turned out that the waiting game won’t be too long after all. That being said, reports are already coming in that the update is already being slowly rolled out as of the moment. The rollout as usual happens via OTA so a notification is bound to appear on your handset to let you know of its availability. If you do not have the patience to wait for the notification to make itself known, then you have the option of manually checking for the update and hope it turns up as soon as possible.
The update is said to weigh in at 114.4 MB and if even manual checking for the update isn’t working for you, you have the option of downloading the update directly from the servers of Google and just have it flashed onto your device. However, if you do not have the guts for this kind of thing, then you are better off waiting for the official OTA update to land on your handset lest you void your warranty (if you have any left, that is) or worse, turn your Google Nexus S to a paper weight.
As for the Google Nexus S, this handset is obviously no longer a spring chicken. Its circuitry revolves around a Hummingbird processor which brings to the device an ARM Cortex-A8 processor clocked at 1 GHz and 512 MB of RAM. The internal storage of the handset is pegged at 16 GB however there is no option to have this expanded. The display of the handset is a 4.0-inch SuperAMOLED panel with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels while its dual-shooter configuration equips the handset with a rear-facing 5MP shooter and a front-facing VGA vide call camera.
