The tech industry has seen several efforts from Google aimed at connecting technological innovation with daily household tasks. The latest effort from the folks at Google would obviously be the much talked about Google Glass. After several demonstrations, the world is now aware of the potential that Google Glass holds. Having seen Google’s past track record, it’s obvious that the company isn’t going to stop here. In a latest demonstration presented by the Internet giant, the concept of using Android accessories to automate home tasks is being floated. In this concept, the entire house features a network of connected Android accessories, which can be controlled from a mobile phone or tablet.
Automation of every possible household accessory seems to be Google’s motive. Google has previously demonstrated the capabilities of central hubs in connecting and communicating with each other through a system of connected lights and speakers. From a concept established by Tex Avery in 1949, Google’s vision was clear from their demonstration at the I/O conference in 2011. Google even went as far as to demonstrate an actual product – wirelessly controlled LED lights manufactured by Lighting Science which were expected to release at the end of the same year. With no further updates or news since then, critics have questioned the seriousness of Google’s Android@Home project.
It has been almost two years since the I/O event in 2011 and there has been no explicit mention of this project by Google in that time. There are jokes running around that the concept of switching on one’s air conditioner from the road is best left to another company to discover. Last month saw positive signs for the project as the Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 ROM featured significant elements for taking the Android@Home project forward. Even Google’s competitors are looking at the potential that this sector has to offer.
There is already enough hype surrounding Apple’s iWatch and even Microsoft doesn’t want to lag behind as it tries to expand in this sector by acquiring different start-ups. With the internet being ubiquitous and wireless technology being incorporated in all kinds of ‘smart’ devices, the day may not be far that users will be able to control their washing machines and dishwashers from the office through their mobile phones.
