Since its announcement a couple of months ago, the HTC One X has had a monopoly of the smartphone spotlight given the fact that a lot of our smartphone-crazed brethren consider the current flagship device from Taiwanese smartphone and tablet manufacturer HTC as the most powerful handset in the whole Android ecosystem as of the moment given the fact that it is powered by quad-core processor under the hood. This is short-lived however because smartphone powerhouse Samsung has already unveiled its current flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy S III.

Pre-order the HTC One X starting at $149.

In this battle of the superphones, we are bound to ask which will make it to the top of the smartphone leaderboards. Which will get the better of the other? Which will get more attention from our smartphone-crazed brethren? Read on to get a point by point comparison of the HTC One X and the Samsung Galaxy S III.

In terms of design and aesthetics, the Samsung Galaxy S III is bigger than the HTC One X though not by much with its dimensions of 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm compared to the 134.4 x 69.9 x 8.9 mm of the Taiwanese flagship handset. Despite being heavier at 133 grams compared to the One X’s 130 grams, the Samsung Galaxy S III is a bit slimmer by 0.3mm at 8.6 mm than the 8.9 mm thin One X. t is a given though that both handsets exhibit the solid build quality that is to be expected in a flagship handset so we are not too keen in nitpicking through details like this.

What we would like to set our eyes on are the components that can be found under the hoods of the two superphones. The HTC One X has the distinction of being the first smartphone in the world to pack a quad-core processor with its NVIDIA Tegra 3 chipset and its 1.5 GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor. The Samsung Galaxy S III answers back with its proprietary Exynos 4212 chipset which gives the Samsung flagship a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor clocked at 1.4 GHz. Both handsets have 1 gigabyte of RAM to support their respective processors so pretty much, the two superphones are in equal footing in this regard.

In terms of their displays, both handsets sport HD-capable panels with the Samsung Galaxy S III packing a 4.8-inch SuperAMOLED HD display while the HTC One X comes with a 4.7-inch Super IPS LCD 2 display. Both displays have a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels but the HTC One X comes off with the better display because of slightly higher pixel density.

The Samsung Galaxy S III one ups the HTC One X when it comes to storage space because the Samsung flagship will be released in different models of up to 64GB capacity with the option for memory expansion which is decidedly missing in the HTC One X. In terms of shooters, the Samsung Galaxy S III is equal to the HTC One X when it came to the main camera with both handsets sporting 8MP shooters in their rear panels but Samsung’s bet edges the One X when it came to the front snapper with its 1.9MP shooter compared to the Taiwanese’s 1.3MP.

When you come to think of it, the two superphones are on a level playing field and at the end of the day, everything will boil down to preference. We are still waiting for more real-world tests of the two handsets and get back to you with more details.  Pre-order the HTC One X starting at $149.
