HTC had said earlier this year that it was going to reconsider its policy about unlocked phones, giving no further details of the plan at that time. However it has been reported today that there indeed is something that HTC is going to excite its customers with as the company announced a timeline for unlocking the boot loaders on some of its devices.
It has been planned that the company will release the software updates sometime in August, which will allow the users of HTC Sensation to unlock their phones. The users of HTC Sensation 4G at T-Mobile and HTC Evo 3D at Sprint will also be given the ability to unlock their phones; however no dates have been confirmed for the latter two devices.
It’s an advantage for the advanced users who seek to customize their devices and have deeper access to the software on them. The matter has now become an important allowance all over the mobile industry. As increasingly more manufacturers and carriers continue to modify and add their own features to the base OS of Android, the variation among the devices is quite large and at times the end users are frustrated by it.
The company has said on its Facebook page that it is in the testing phase for the unlocking capability at the moment and expects that it will be fully functional by early September for the devices which have received the software updates. It added that it will continue to roll out the capability to unlock over time to other devices in maintenance releases and new shipments.
HTC also announced that it will roll out Android Gingerbread 2.3 updates for the Desire handset soon and revealed a timeline which begins at the end of this month. The HTC Desire is known to have had its share of ups and downs; it has earlier missed a date for the Gingerbread update which was scheduled for February this year. Regardless, it is big news for the users of Desire which are very anxious to get their hands on a newer version of the Android mobile platform.
HTC earlier made news for outperforming itself in the second quarter this year, beating the forecasts of many analysts and reporting that the sales in June were increased by almost 90%. HTC is set to ship around 50 million handsets this year after having doubled its profits and broken its sales records.
