HTC might be coming off one of the most successful years in a while, but according to the latest reports, the company could be setting its sights even higher. HTC released the popular HTC One smartphone last April, but looking at the numbers the phone is still trailing behind the Galaxy S4 in terms of sales and popularity. The iPhone 5S was released last year as well and that put HTC even further back in the running for the number one mobile phone maker in the United States. Apple also released a lower cost, entry level model of the iPhone with the iPhone 5C.
Now that HTC can clearly see the competition that is on the market, it is time for the company to act in now in order to get some market share from companies like Samsung and Apple. Leaked photos showed up this week that indicate that company could be working on a new batch of colors for the mid-range “Desire” series of smartphones. If this is the case, Apple could get some mid-level completion since the iPhone 5C came with a variety of color choices as well.
The HTC Desire series come with a unique feature in the octa-core ARM-based processor and that does not seem to bring the price into high end range. The processors are made by MediaTek and because of that the chips can be installed and brought to market at a lower price. The leaked images were published online and show what looks like a slim phone with black colored glass panel surrounding the display and a unibody plastic back side that reportedly comes in yellow, orange, light blue and red. As of right now, the company has not announced what markets the phone will be available in.
Up to this point, HTC has reserved the United States for its higher end models, but if the company is looking to take on all parts of Apple, it could bring the mid-range devices to the United States. HTC has the HTC 8X in the Windows Phone market and the HTC One in the Android market and has left the mid-range devices out of the market in the United States. HTC could increase the market share the company has in the high end market, but is seeing little market share in the mid-range arena.
