HTC Droid DNA has arrived, and we are not referring to the Deoxyribonucleic Acid makeup of a half man, half robot from some sci-fi movie. We are referring of course to the HTC Droid DNA, which arrived on November 21 on the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE system in the United States. That handset delivers one of the few quad core processors found on a smartphone today, double the average RAM memory of a mobile handset, a huge display, and what is quite possibly the highest pixel density of any smartphone.
The Droid DNA currently retails for $199 on contract at the Amazon Wireless store during their annual holiday sale, and Near Field Communications (NFC) support is offered out-of-the-box. It appears that smartphone manufacturer HTC took the best elements from every handset that they have to create the Droid DNA 4G, which is as small as a smartphone can be with a 5.0 inch display. The handset is also slim comparatively, delivers the full range Beats Audio sound system with dedicated speaker amplifiers, offers full HD resolution, better than average run time for a 4G smartphone, and high resolution video capture.
And as one of the few handsets to do so, the HTC Droid DNA offers the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean operating system out-of-the-box, with the popular HTC Sense 4+ UI overlay accepting multitouch, capacitive gestures. The handset measures 0.38 inches in thickness (9.73 mm), and weighs 4.87 ounces (130 g). The 5.0 inch ImageChip ISP S-LCD 3 display delivers an incredibly high 441 pixels per inch, and this creates an overall 1,080 x 1,920 pixel resolution. More than 16 million colors are present on the HTC Droid DNA 4G, and a layer of scratch resistant Gorilla Glass overlays the screen.
The 2,020 mg battery on board delivers a full 12.6 hours of talk time and 14.6 days of standby battery power from a single charge. The system chip is a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 model, including a quad core 1.5 GHz central processor and graphics specific Adreno 320 chip. A full 2.0 GB of RAM system memory is on board, as is 16 GB of built-in storage.
The handset delivers the same 8.0 megapixel camcorder on the back as previous Droid Razr model smartphones, but ups the resolution on the front facing chat cam with a 2.1 megapixel model. That rear snapper records video in 1,080 P HD resolution with the f/2.0 lens, and the chat cam can place video calls. The above-mentioned Beats Audio joins a YouTube video player and built-in music player in the multimedia package on board the HTC Droid DNA 4G, and the handset provides video out to an exterior display or HDTV through DLNA wireless connectivity.
