Smartphone shoppers looking for the Droid DNA 4G Android smartphone on the official Verizon website the last couple of days may be perplexed. The handset has been a flagship smartphone for Verizon, has sold extremely well, and is popular with mobile handset shoppers. However, a couple of days ago it inexplicably disappeared from Big Red’s website. Have no fear, the phone is still available from online retailers like Amazon, where the $49 on contract price tag is substantially better than the three digit retail price the handset was priced at on Verizon’s site.
Whether the disappearance of the Droid DNA 4G from Verizon’s website was a mistake or intentional, it helped fuel rumors that the upcoming HTC One would act as a Droid DNA successor. A recent Verizon Wireless spokesperson asked about the Droid DNA disappearance on the company’s website claims that the HTC One and DNA with both run alongside on Verizon’s 4G LTE network in the United States. The discount on-contract retail price offered by Amazon is the lowest the handset has seen at that online retailer.
The HTC Droid DNA arrived late November of last year delivering the highest pixel density of any smartphone at the time. Still one of the leaders in resolution and pixel density, the Droid DNA 4G offers 441 pixels over every inch of display space to create an overall resolution of 1,080 x 1,920 pixels. The large 5.0 inch ImageChip ISP S-LCD 3 display is protected against the usual wear and tear by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass, and provides light and proximity sensors to aid in conserving battery power.
That gives the handset up to 12.6 hours of talk time delivered from a full battery charge, as well as 14.6 days of standby battery power. The handset uses the HTC sense UI to mesh with Android’s 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system, and is powered by a speedy 1.5 GHz quad core Qualcomm CPU. A YouTube video player joins a built-in music player and exclusive Beats Audio full range sound enhancement in the HTC Droid DNA 4G multimedia package, with dedicated speaker amps and a 2.5 volt headset amplifier.
The phone also delivers a full 2.0 GB of RAM memory and 16 GB of built-in storage space. Measuring just 0.38 inches (9.73 mm) and weighing 4.87 ounces (138 g), the handset is slim and light compared to other smartphones offering a 5.0 inch screen. The Droid DNA 4G comes equipped with an 8.0 megapixel camcorder, capable of continuous capture of up to four shots per second, simultaneous HD video and image capture, and 1,080P HD resolution video recording. There is also a front facing chat cam, and the handset offers NFC capabilities out-of-the-box.
