Touting the infamous “coming soon” release date, HTC recently unveiled their new Evo 4G LTE Android smartphone. The handset will deliver the popular but hard to find version 4.0 of Google’s operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), and is about as packed full of features as any handset you will find. The specs and performance levels mentioned below are preliminary at this point, but seem to be pretty solid, however have not been confirmed by HTC or Sprint. Sprint is going to be the exclusive home of the HTC Evo 4G LTE handset, and it looks ready to take up right where the best-selling Sprint flagship Epic Touch 4G left off.

While the retail price has not been confirmed, a handset arriving with Android’s 4.0 ICS OS, HTC’s intuitive and intelligent Sense user interface Android overlay, and the feature set we are hearing would have to arrive in the $199 to $299 retail price range with a new two-year activation. Physically, the handset looks like most smartphones, and is average in size and weight when compared to other 4G handsets. But delivering the elusive ICS operating system is not the only feature on the HTC Evo 4G LTE that puts it in a class by itself.

The screen is, at 4.70 inches, one of the largest in the 4G smartphone marketplace. Pixel density is at the high end of the 4G spectrum, at 312 pixels per inch, delivering an overall resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. The oft-found scratch resistant Gorilla Glass overlays that capacitive multitouch S-LCD 2 screen. The battery on board is an oversized 2,000 mAh cell, and run time from a single charge is as yet unreported. The handset comes with a convenient kickstand that holds the screen at just the right angle for viewing movies and other content in landscape orientation, and the handset also delivers the high-end audio feature, the Beats by Dr. Dre app.

The power pack also sets the phone apart from most other 4G handsets, and the microchip package includes a dual core Snapdragon S4 Krait central processor that has been clocked at 1.5 GHz, as well as an Adreno 225 graphics processing unit. 1.0 GB of RAM system memory is on board, as well as 16 GB of built-in user accessible storage. Smartphone camcorders with 8.0 megapixel resolution are not uncommon, however, the feature set on the HTC Evo 4G LTE camcorder is one of the most inclusive we have seen yet.

With an LED flash and the ability to record video in 1080P HD resolution, and features like a back-illuminated sensor (BSI), autofocus, smile detection, white balance, face detection, exposure control, panorama shot taking ability, multishot mode, digital zoom, ISO control, geo-tagging, special effects, high dynamic range mode (HDR) and a self timer, this is the closet shutterbug’s dream smartphone camcorder. There is also a front facing 1.3 megapixel chat on board. Sprint would only confirm that the handset will released in Q2 this year.
