HTC Inspire 4G AT&T customers recently received an operating system upgrade from the Android Froyo 2.2 OS to the latest version of a more efficient and enhanced Gingerbread OS, version 2.3.3. And while the update is slated to roll out across the AT&T network automatically with an over the air system update with message notification to all Inspire 4G handset owners, some may be too impatient to wait for the automatic update. The good news is a manual install is available for those of you with even a minimal amount of technical know-how.
First off, check your handset to see if the update is ready to be downloaded to your phone. It could be that you missed your notification, or it never made it to your handset. From your phone’s home screen, access the Menu, and then choose Settings. There should be an icon that says “AT&T Software Update”, and after clicking that, you should see “HTC Wi-Fi software upgrade”. Click on that and then on “Check Now.” If it is there, you will begin the download process. If not, follow the steps below.
(Alert: Manually performing the download will delete all your info! Before proceeding, back up your profile and all apps and storage. MicroSD cards will not be erased.)
To proceed with updating your HTC Inspire phone, you will need to download the “HTC Inspire 4G for AT&T Gingerbread ROM update” to a computer. This can be accessed by going to HTC’s website and clicking on Support. Also, you will need to download the HTC Sync software available at their site, so download this as well. Then simply connect your Inspire 4G to your computer with a USB cable. When you see the “Connect to PC” pop-up on your phone, select HTC Sync.
Now go to your PC, locate the HTC Inspire 4G ROM update and double-click. From here you will receive several system update instructions, and simply follow each one. When it is through, you will see a finish button you can click on in your download wizard. Click on this and your Inspire 4G will reboot. If this sounds like too much of a hassle, simply wait a few more days and the software update should appear if it hasn’t already.
HTC claims to have worked out a delivery platform with AT&T to finish the new over the air upgrades by the end of August. Enjoy your newly enhanced Inspire 4G and the Gingerbread OS upgrades, and be ready for a different OS layout and more efficient navigation, as well as improved battery life.
