Quad-core mobile devices are starting to break in to the smartphone market but the superphone that made it possible and paved the way for the others to follow is the One X, the current flagship device of Taiwanese smartphone and tablet manufacturer HTC. In fact, the HTC One X has the distinction of being the first handset in the world to come with a quad-core processor in its internals. This was way back when the handset was still known by its HTC Edge codename from late 2011. Before being announced, the handset also went through several name changes before being unveiled as the HTC One X at the Mobile World Congress 2012 in Berlin back in February.
Since its release, the flagship device was expected to drive up the market share of HTC but sad to say, the HTC One X failed to do so. Stiff competition from other handsets from Apple and Samsung made it particularly more difficult for the HTC One X to really make it big despite the fact that for a time, it was the only quad-core powered handset available in the market. A portion of the population also didn’t like the fact that the handset was sealed and did not come with a user-replaceable battery and has no option for memory expansion – a fact that made the Samsung Galaxy S III a more viable option for power users and regular guys alike.
Despite this, the HTC One X 4G still managed to remain in the list of 10 bestselling smartphones released by Krusell based on sales volume on a global scale. For the uninitiated, Krusell is a global supplier of carrying cases for smartphones and other gadgets. Looking at the rankings for July, the HTC One X managed to snag the number 6 spot – up 3 places from its number 9 June ranking. Analysts say that this is a good sign for the manufacturer and opens up the possibility that the global sales of HTC smartphones have been improving. As expected the, Samsung Galaxy S III held on to the top spot for July and is expected to still come out on top this August but could face stiff competition once Apple releases the iPhone 5.
Despite being edged out by other handsets such as the Xperia S and Xperia U in the rankings, the HTC One X is still one of the best handsets in the market today based on its specs sheet. It has a QualComm MSM8960 SnapDragon chipset under the hood which brings to the device a dual-core 1.5 GHz Krait processor and a full gigabyte of RAM. The storage space on the handset is pegged at 16GB while its display is a 4.7-inch Super IPS LCD 2 panel with an HD resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. It also comes with an 8MP shooter at its back panel and this is paired with a 1.3MP video call camera found in the front bezel of the device.
