htconesThe HTC One S is probably the most consistent seller in the mid range for that smartphone manufacturer, and HTC has begun rolling out the Jelly Bean 4.1.1 Android OS update for that device. Also accompanying the operating system upgrade for one of the first smartphones to ship with Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) 4.0 is the HTC Sense 4.0+ update. That software update is a full 598 MB, so we recommend your handset have a full battery charge and you connect to a PC or high-speed Wi-Fi connection for the update download.

To check your HTC One S for update availability, go to the handset’s Settings, and check under Software for updates. Look for update number 3.19.720.100 and simply follow the screen prompts. While almost a year old is generally too old in the smartphone marketplace, that is not the case for the powerful HTC One S. The phone has a slightly smaller screen and than the large HTC One X, but still delivers high-end features.

Extremely slim at 0.31 inches (7.88 mm), the handset is also compact and lightweight, measuring 5.15 x 2.56 inches (130.9 x 65) and weighing 4.22 ounces (120 g). That produces a smaller, thinner and lighter form factor than the typical 4G smartphone with the same size display, and the HTC One S offers a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED screen. Resolution runs 540 x 960 pixels, delivered at the rate of 256 pixels located over each inch of display space.

The screen accepts standard capacitive, multitouch gestures for device navigation, and improves battery life with the power conserving light and proximity sensors that are built-in. Talk time runs approximately 7.0 hours after a full battery charge, and standby time runs approximately 17.9 days. Video capture is delivered at 1,080P HD resolution via the rear facing 8.0 megapixel camcorder, and a front facing VGA quality chat cam also offers video call support. Last year HTC purchased a controlling interest in the Beats by Dr. Dre audio software brand, and Beats Audio is present on the handset.

The f/2.0 lens on that rear snapper combines with a back illuminated sensor (BSI) and built-in LED flash to offer excellent low light camera functionality, and the handset is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8260A system chip. 16 GB of storage are built-in, as is 1.0 GB of RAM memory, and an Adreno 225 GPU handles all graphics processing to free up the dual core 1.5 GHz Krait central processor to handle other requests and operations.
