Having received positive reviews for the One S and One X, HTC is now looking to manufacture only slim smartphones, which the company feels is what consumers want. At an annual bloggers’ event thrown by HTC, called Frequencies, the company has also been quoted as saying that customers prefer a thin profile over extended battery life.
HTC is clearly already inclined towards slimmer phones with its One series of phones. Designers are also prioritizing camera quality over raw megapixels. Phones with QWERTY keypads seem to be on their way out, mostly due to the bulk they add to the phone’s profile. One of the most controversial quotes in the day came when Bjorn Kilburn, Vice President of Phone Strategy at HTC said that the company had taken a unanimous decision to reject models with 3000 mAh batteries. These batteries have been used in the popular Motorola Razr Maxx, which can last over two to three days on moderate to heavy usage.
Kilburn asserted that reports from various consumer surveys pointed towards a preference for phones with thickness between 8 to 10 mm. A larger battery would mean an increase in the thickness of the device. Kilburn went on to say that that researchers at HTC have already managed to produce a more efficient battery without increasing its size. HTC managed to integrate an 1800 mAh battery in the 8.9 mm thick HTC One X phone. However, the Motorola Razr Maxx (the same thickness as the HTC One X) has a 3300 mAh battery in comparison. HTC further talked up the power efficiency of its latest Flagship, the One X, by saying that it has a Super LCD 2 screen, which in its opinion is twice as power efficient as an AMOLED display.
Another feature that HTC is shying away from is the hardware QWERTY keypad. Kilburn said that the even though there are people who want a QWERTY keypad on phones today, there isn’t enough demand for such phones and putting effort into designing such phones is a waste of resources. As far as the camera aspect is concerned, Kilburn said that HTC will now focus its attention towards designing phone cameras with wide apertures, better pixel quality (individual pixels) and increased depth of field. HTC uses EDOF technology in order to improve the autofocus. This technology allows better pictures in low light conditions and also helps reduce pixel noise.
