As Apple is sending out invites for its September 12th event that is, in all probability, going to be the unveiling of the new iPhone, its competitors too are doing the same. HTC is preparing to announce something new in an event that is scheduled for the 19th of the month in New York but the Taiwanese company has not revealed any details about what it will be discussing there. This event possibly comes as a response to Apple’s scheduled launch of the iPhone 5 as HTC tries to take away some of the limelight.
Given the craze about the Windows Phone 8 platform and the fact that Samsung has already released the ATIV S that runs the OS and Nokia’s upcoming event unveiling its own devices, there is every chance that HTC is also planning to show some of its own devices that run the platform. Moreover, in light of the recent judgment against Samsung in its case against Apple which was a blow to the Android community as a whole, it wouldn’t be surprising if HTC too decided to go the way of WP8 to take advantage of the new OS while at the same time controlling damage to itself because of the association with Android.
If HTC is indeed announcing WP8 devices on the 19th of September, the real beneficiary will be Microsoft. With Nokia’s event, it will definitely get the attention that it needs to gain a foothold in the market but with another manufacturer entering the fray, it will mean that Microsoft has a reasonable number of partners in the industry. Moreover, with the official release of Windows 8 to the market scheduled for October and Windows Phone 8 in November, the software giant is sure to be in the limelight for the rest of the quarter at least.
There is also the possibility that HTC is holding this event to announce the relaunch of its tablet which is rumored to look like the iMac. The first pictures of the tablet were released last week and there hasn’t been any more news about it so the chances of the event being an unveiling of WP8 devices are still greater. HTC seems to be trying all possible avenues to restore its falling market share and stock price. If this works out for it, it might just save the company from falling down like RIM.
