Back in the day when Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was still the latest version of the Android operating system for mobile devices, we saw manufacturers take center stage to announce their ICS plans for the handsets in their respective lineups. HTC drew first blood by announcing that its Sensation line of smartphones will get the ICS refresh while Korean smartphone and tablet manufacturer Samsung confirmed that its Samsung Galaxy S II and Samsung Galaxy Note will be the first of its devices to get a tasty Ice Cream Sandwich treat. Other manufacturers followed suit and we found a common denominator during each announcement – the high-end devices are the ones that will get the upgrade to ICS.
This was to be the trend but Sony deviated from the norm. In fact, the manufacturer gave a couple of its midrange handsets a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich and these same handsets back then where already enjoying ICS while the Sony big guns are still waiting for the update to be rolled out. Because of this, Sony got commended for managing to make Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich work beautifully on handsets with an average specs sheet.
And now, it is the turn of one of Sony’s big guns to get a taste of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. As such, the manufacturer has started the rollout of the Ice Cream Sandwich update to the Sony Xperia P today. This will give the handset a much needed bump up since it has been stuck in the Gingerbread generation since hitting the shelves back in May.
As is always the case with major updates such as this, the update may become available in some territories earlier while others will get it at a much later date. In addition to that, Sony confirmed that the ICS update will be rolled out via OTA but in some cases, the update can only be applied to the Sony Xperia P using the PC Companion application.
The update will not only crank up the operating system of the Sony Xperia P to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich but it will also bring new media applications such as Movies, Album and Walkman. It will also increase the standby time of the handset and give it a new lock screen with enhanced functionalities. A user will also have the capability to resize the widgets of the Sony Xperia P for improved personalization once the update is applied to the Sony Xperia P. Also, a user will also get more control over mobile data consumption as well as get a recent apps button to get an overview of the applications currently running in the background.
With the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update, the Sony Xperia P has just become more capable than it already is and before we know it, users of the handset will already be clamoring for the device to get a taste of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as well.
