As of the moment, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is the latest iteration of the Google mobile operating system but when you come to think of it, there are still a handful of very capable devices that are still waiting to get upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. One of these handsets is the LG Optimus 2X which earned the distinction of being the first smartphone to be released in the market with a dual-core processor in its internals. The delayed arrival of ICS on the handset is not surprising at all given the fact that its manufacturer is infamous for being not very timely in showing the handsets in its stable some software update love.
However, there were reports that came out a couple of days back that the LG Optimus 2X will no longer get upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich. This much was confirmed by the Canadian arm of LG via Twitter when it responded to one user of the handset asking as to when the update can be expected to land on the handset. The tweet was a very straightforward “the Optimus 2X will not be receiving the ICS upgrade” and with this statement, LG closed the doors on the handset and let it get stuck in the Gingerbread generation.
Word on the street however is that LG Korea refuted the prior statement from its Canadian arm and confirmed that the ICS update will still land on the LG Optimus 2X. The announcement was made via LG Korea’s Twitter account and to further clarify things, the manufacturer confirmed that the update was delayed because of additional tests and not because it was already cancelled as previously reported. Sad to say, it looks like this only applies to Korea but if one version of the handset is slated to get the tasty Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade, then there is a possibility that other variants of the handset released elsewhere will still get cranked up to ICS. No confirmation yet about this but we are crossing our fingers that this will be the case in the future.
As for the LG Optimus 2X, this is your typical LG handset with a design aesthetic that makes it look like an ugly slab of black plastic. It has dimensions of 123.9 x 63.2 x 10.9 mm and it tips the scales at 139 grams. Under the hood, the handset relies on its NVIDIA Tegra 2 AP20H chipset to power its operation. This SoC comes with a dual-core 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor and 512 MB of RAM while the internal memory of the handset comes up to 8GB. Of course, this is still expandable because the LG Optimus 2X comes with a dedicated memory expansion slot. Display-wise, the handset boasts of a 40-inch IPS LCD panel with a 480 x 800 resolution while its dual-shooter configuration features a rear-facing 8MP shooter and a front-facing 1.3MP video call camera.
