In the Android ecosystem, everybody is already waiting for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the latest iteration of the Google mobile operating system, to make its way to the high-end handsets in every manufacturer’s stable. Though this may be the case, it is very unfortunate to see several very capable devices still stuck in the Gingerbread generation and still waiting for the upgrade that will crank their OS version up to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
This seems to be the case with the Sony Xperia Ion. Announced back in April and managing to make its debut in the shelves in June, the handset failed to make a mark in the smartphone competition because it run Android 2.3 Gingerbread for its operating system at launch despite the fact that it is the flagship device of Sony for that matter. Sony for its part however confirmed and reassured users of the handset that an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is slated for the handset in the near future. In short, the manufacturer promised a swift upgrade to ICS for the Sony Xperia Ion.
It is a good thing that Sony is making good on its earlier promise of a swift ICS upgrade for the Sony Xperia Ion. Looking back, the manufacturer already rolled out the ICS update to the LTE version of the handset a couple of days back but this time around, reports are coming in that the AT&T variant of the Sony Xperia Ion is already getting its tasty treat of Ice Cream Sandwich.
Should you happen to rock an AT&T Sony Xperia Ion for your mobile weapon of choice, there is a big chance that the notification that will let you know of the ICS availability on your device is already there. The only snag is that the update is not being rolled out via the usual OTA manner and you can only download and install the update on your Sony Xperia Ion by hooking your handset to your computer and running SuS, Sony’s PC companion software.
Once the update has been applied to the device, it will crank up the software build of the Sony Xperia Ion to 6.1.c.1.105 and will give your handset a taste of all the goodies and treat associated with ICS. Sad to say, we are still waiting for AT&T to release the official changelog of the update so we can get a handle on what exactly the update will bring to the handset.
As for the Sony Xperia Ion, it has a QualComm MSM8260 SnapDragon chipset under the hood which gives the handset a dual-core 1.5 GHz Scorpion processor and 1GB of RAM. Storage space on the handset comes up to 13.2GB with 12.9GB set aside for user content. This is still expandable though by making use of the handset’s dedicated memory expansion slot. In terms of its display, the Sony Xperia Ion packs a 4.55-inch LED-backlit LCD panel with a 1280 x 720 resolution while its camera department features a rear 12MP shooter and a front 1.3MP video call camera.

I got the update on my AT&T LTE Xperia Ion earlier today through PC Companion. Everyone should be getting the update through PCC sometime today and tomorrow. If you are still not receiving the update restart your PC and check again.
I am sure everyone should get it within the week. Seeing as I got mine today early in the morning then that tells me the ICS update is officially out for the AT&T model. There is still a lot to get used to with this update just letting you guys know. They made a lot of changes to the Background Data option in ICS. You will know what I mean once you update. A bit frustrating to be honest. Other than that no problems yet with the update. Just make sure to reboot your phone after the update.
