Now that the iPhone 5 has been released and features almost all of the expected changes, the inevitable is happening- comparison with the Galaxy SIII and rightfully so, considering that both manufacturers claim their device’s superiority over the other. The iPhone 5 comes with a larger screen and a faster processor than its predecessor but is that really enough to beat the humongous screen of the Galaxy S III and what is considered virtually the most powerful smartphone by most experts?
The design is the first front to compare both phones on and there is no doubt that the iPhone 5 wins here. Apple has made the phone as slim as possible at 7.6mm whereas the SIII is a whole millimeter thicker. Moreover, the iPhone is cased in aluminum which has a good finish and looks more appealing than the chunky plastic casing of the SIII. While the SIII might be easier to handle given the plastic, the iPhone is molded to fit into the hand as it has shed the stepped design of its predecessors. The SIII is also quite large making it uncomfortable at times but it certainly offers a more superior viewing experience with its Super AMOLED HD display.
Coming to the display, the iPhone features a 4” in plane switching (IPS) display with a resolution of 1136×640 while the SIII has a 4.8” display with 1280×720 resolution. The S III’s screen is also Super AMOLED, making its black response and vivid colors far superior. Though IPS displays produce more natural colors, given the larger screen size the S III comes up trumps and while Apple has increased the screen size, its pixel density has remained the same, implying only a marginal improvement.
On the inside, the Samsung phone has a 1.4GHz quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM, while the iPhone has the same amount of RAM though its processor is yet to be benchmarked properly. However, initial tests showed that the SIII is superior here. The iPhone 5 is however at least twice as fast as its predecessor, the iPhone 4S. On the outset, both phones have similar cameras but the iPhone features a panorama mode that can extend image size to 28 megapixels.
The final verdict is still quite unclear but those who are accustomed to the Apple and iOS ecosystem will prefer the iPhone 5 and vice versa. For new buyers, the SIII might seem a better introduction to the world of smartphones.
