If you happen to have AT&T for your wireless provider and are rocking the carrier’s variant of the Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro for your mobile weapon of choice because of its waterproof, shock resistant and dust proof nature, you might want to be on the lookout for a little notification to pop up on your handset. Alternatively, you might also want to manually check for any updates that landed on your device or barring that, you also have the option to hook up your handset to your computer and fire up your Samsung Kies software because a big update is about to head on over to your handset.

As it stands, AT&T has already started pushing out the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update to its variant of the Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro and the rollout is slated to commence today. Looking back, the Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro is only a mid-range device and under normal circumstances wouldn’t be considered for an upgrade to Jelly Bean so it is really nice to see Samsung and AT&T working together to give the handset a taste of the Android 4.1 refresh.

Once the update is applied to the handset, the software update package will update the firmware version of the Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and bring in two all the nice Jelly Bean-associated goodies along with some other specific treats for the handset. In addition to that, the update will crank up the baseband version of the handset to I547UCBLL1 and update its build number to JRO03L.I547UCBLL1 at the same time.

As for the goodies and treats the Jelly Bean update brings to the Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro, these include the regular host of improvements associated with the version of Android such as Project Butter and Google Now in addition to the specific improvements to the handset such as a new UI for its camera that includes live filters and option for pause / resume during video capture, a new keyboard option that includes the Swype keyboard and a “Blocking Mode” that gives the user the option to block calls, notifications and LED lights for a certain period of time. The update will also bring the Pop-up Play picture-in-picture video windows functionality to the Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro.

As for the Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro, the handset was announced back in October 2012 and made its debut in the shelves of AT&T during the same month. The handset has its circuitry built around its QualComm MSM8960 SnapDragon chipset which brings into play a dual-core 1.5 GHz Krait processor and a full gigabyte of RAM. The storage space onboard the handset is a bit meager at just 8GB but since the Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro comes with a dedicated microSD card slot for memory expansion, this shouldn’t be too much of an issue really. As for its display, the handset sports a 4.0-inch SuperAMOLED panel with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels while its camera department includes a rear 5MP shooter and a front 1.3MP video call and self-portrait snapper.
