Back in the day when Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was still the latest iteration of the Google mobile operating system and the toast of the smartphone town, manufacturers were scrambling to rearrange their timelines to accommodate the development and rollout of Ice Cream Sandwich to the devices in their respective stables. Of course, unlocked versions of any handset were to get first dibs on the platform revision while carrier-branded variants had to wait a couple of months longer before they finally got their just dessert of ICS.

This is also the case in US shores because carriers have to give the green light first before ICS could get rolled out to the handsets in their respective portfolios. Back then, it was rumored that the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch from Sprint was supposed to be the first handset to get cranked up to ICS but sadly this did not happen because ICS first landed on the HTC Vivid 4G from AT&T. The Sprit variant of the Samsung Galaxy S II still for updated to ICS albeit at a much later time though. Now, the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch takes things one step further as it finally gets another software love for that matter.

As it stands, the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch is finally getting upgraded to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean starting today as confirmed by the Now Network through its official support site. Sad to say, the update is not getting rolled out via OTA so don’t bother waiting for that notification to come up or continuously mashing that Check now button to manually initiate the update process. The only way you can download the Jelly Bean update and have it applied onto the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch is to hook your handset up to your PC and fire up the Samsung Kies software to get the update process rolling.

No changelog or specific details about the update are currently showing on the support site of the Now Network with regard to the update but one tidbit there is that it will crank up the build of the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch to GB27 and will bring the usual Jelly Bean treats to the handset such as Project Butter and Google Now.

Going back to the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, the handset is already aging but it still packs some impressive hardware in its internals. It relies on its Exynos C210 chipset to power its operation while a dual-core 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor works with 1 GB of RAM in generating the computing power needed by the device. The Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch comes with 16GB of onboard storage but this can still be expanded using the dedicated microSD card slot of the handset. Its display on the other hand is a 4.52-inch SuperAMOLED Plus screen with a 480 x 800 resolution while its camera department features a rear 8MP shooter and a front 2MP snapper.
