Amazon has announced they have added another provider of video content to their video streaming Amazon Prime membership service for the launch of their Kindle Fire. Amazon Prime members pay an annual fee and receive streaming video, as well as free shipping on retail products purchased from the Amazon website. PBS Distribution will be offering both archived content and current PBS programming for all Amazon Prime members, bringing the total number of videos available to Amazon’s Prime Instant Video library to over 12,000 titles by the end of 2011.
Amazon released the Kindle Fire 7 inch tablet PC for pre-orders last month at a retail price of $199. The 7 inch color touchscreen tablet is a perfect device for media consumption. Amazon is beefing up their Prime membership and instant video availability in advance of the November 15 physical launch date. Amazon is providing 30 days of free Prime Membership to anyone who purchases a Kindle Fire Tablet PC, and just such a signing is intended to make the budget priced tablet even more attractive.
Popular PBS award-winning programming like NOVA, Masterpiece Theater and the Antiques Roadshow will now be viewable to Kindle Fire owners with Amazon Prime membership. In early November, more than 200 episodes of Julia Child’s ‘The French Chef’ will also be made available. Amazon is also offering free Cloud storage to all Kindle Fire owners for any content provided by Amazon, and instant backup of all Kindle content.
The screen on the Amazon Kindle Fire is a full-color 7 inch IPS display with 1024 x 600 pixel resolution, and the tablet employs a dual core Texas Instruments OMAP4 processing chip and 8 GB of internal memory. 16 million colors are supported in that color display. Free Wi-Fi wireless connectivity is offered, and the Kindle Fire delivers 8 hours of continuous run time on a single battery charge, with standby time of up to 30 days.
The Kindle Fire also comes preprogrammed with Amazon proprietary applications like the Amazon Silk Browser, Amazon Instant Video mentioned earlier, the Amazon Appstore and Amazon’s Cloud Drive. When Amazon announced the pre-sale availability of the Kindle Fire tablet at $199, they also announced the Kindle Wi-Fi eReader for $79, the Kindle Touch Wi-Fi eReader for $99, and the Kindle Touch 3G eReader for $149. The Kindle Wi-Fi weighs 14.6 ounces and can hold up to 6,000 books, 80 applications, 10 full-length movies or 800 songs.
