LG and Sprint announced just a little over a month ago that the Optimus G would launch on the Sprint 4G LTE wireless network in the United States on November 11. Visually, the handset looks different than most Android phones, with a sleek black chassis. It is also slightly smaller than, and not as wide as, the Galaxy S III, with a special battery conservation feature, two different operating modes, one of the most powerful mobile handset processors, and double the RAM memory found on most 4G smartphones.
The optional “Power Saver” feature cuts back on the draw made from unnecessary applications once your battery life falls below 30%. You can also run your handset in either standard or eco-mode, with eco-mode using only two of the four processors on board to conserve battery life. Sprint is adding additional 100 major Metropolitan areas in the United States to their first ever 4G LTE system by the end of the year, and the handset has a handy QSlide function which lets you watch a video while simultaneously doing something else, like browsing the web, reading emails, or composing a text message.
The handset measures 5.19 x 2.71 x 0.33 inches (131.9 x 68.9 x 8.45 mm) and weighs 5.11 ounces (145 g), delivering the Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) 4.0 Android operating system out-of-the-box. The large 4.70 inch True HD IPS+ screen with Touch Hybrid Display features offers a resolution of 1,280 x 768 pixels (WXGA quality), and as LG’s first smartphone to feature Zerogap Touch technology, the layer of air usually found between your LCD panel and screen overlay is removed, allowing for better visibility in bright light situations and extreme angles.
Corning Gorilla Glass protects the screen on the LG Optimus G 4G, and 13.0 hours of talk time are available from a single charge of the 2,100 mA battery on board. A Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 microchip set is present, built around a quad core 1.5 GHz Krait central processor. There is also an Adreno 320 GPU handling all graphics requests, a full 2.0 GB of RAM system memory and 32 GB of built-in storage present.
The rear camcorder is a whopping 13.0 megapixels and offers voice activation, recording video in 1,080P HD resolution. A front facing 1.3 megapixel chat cam is also on board, offering video call support, and popular applications YouTube and Picasa have been pre-installed. The handset delivers Near Field Communications (NFC) support out-of-the-box, as well as DLNA video out and simultaneous voice and data access.
