The the LG Thrill 4G Android handset is the first US representation of Europe’s Optimus 3-D, and is the second mobile handset to offer glasses free 3-D viewing technology. The LG Thrill also has the capability of recording 3-D in 720P HD, and two dimensions in 1080P HD. Dual 5 megapixel cameras on the rear of the handset allow for the 3-D recording, and this is basically the same setup employed by the HTC Evo 3-D handset which was the first to deliver such glasses free mobile phone 3-D viewing technology.
An LED flash is located on the back of the handset for use in both 3-D and 2-D modes, and auto focus capability is present. When recording in two dimensions, 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution (1080p HD) is obtained, and in three dimensions 1280 x 720 (720p HD) resolution at 24 frames per second is delivered. Video is recorded in one of two formats; MPEG4 or H.264.
The extra hardware needed to deliver glasses free 3-D technology adds approximately 40% to the weight of the average 4G smartphone. The LG Thrill 4G Android handset measures 5.07 x 2.68 x 0.47 inches (128.8 x 68 x 11.9 mm), and weighs 5.93 oz (168 g). LG employed the typical black slab Android 4G form factor in designing the Thrill 3-D handset.
A dual core Texas Instruments OMAP4 processor at 1.0 GHz handles the Thrill’s operations and is supported with 512 MB of RAM memory and a 3-D graphics hardware accelerator. Facebook, MySpace and Twitter are preloaded software applications, and HTML browsing is supported as well as full support for Adobe’s flash media player.
The LG Thrill 3-D 4G handset comes with a built-in FM stereo, and onboard video and audio players. The audio player supports MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WAV and MIDI files, while the video player can handle MPEG4, H.263, H.264, DivX, WMV, AVI and 3GP file formats. A microUSB port is built in for charging of the handset and access to other devices, and a microSD slot is available for expanding memory storage up to a full 32 GB. Bluetooth stereo access is built-in, as is Wi-Fi b,g,n support for wireless internet connectivity. Video mirroring to an exterior large screen HDTV or monitor is available through HDMI and DLNA technology.
