Nokia and Microsoft recently launched new devices from the Lumia lineup that feature the new mobile operating system, Windows Phone 8. The event comes as a joint one as Microsoft has teamed up with Nokia to market its new OS, albeit not exclusively, but as a major partner. The phones received a lot of positive reviews and they were tipped as the Finnish smartphone manufacturer’s last chance to get back in the market but according to the company, this is not its last chance. The new Lumia phones have generous features and have amazing performance but they are still from a company that has lost 90% of its share value and seen its market share drop from around 50% to single digits.
The Nokia Lumia 900 is on sale now starting at 99.99.
Currently, Nokia is in a pretty bad shape, which is quite obvious for any company that has shed so much value in a few years’ time. With such drastic changes, a lot of factors about the company are affected and its operations are hit leaving it in poor shape to carry out critical R&D. Companies cannot go on for a long time with such a situation and negative margins will eventually mean the bankruptcy of the entire organization. Nokia, however, seems intent on fighting back and regaining its position in the market in the same way that Blackberry manufacturer, Research In Motion is trying to make a comeback. According to executives in Nokia, the new Lumia devices are only a step ahead towards the ultimate goal and are nowhere near being the last chance in competing with Samsung and Apple.
According to analysts who are familiar with the platform and the company, Microsoft is probably holding back the release of other devices as it would not like to flood the market with its brand right away. In addition, by timing the releases of future devices, it can gain several benefits from the cross platform collaboration and integration with Windows 8 and RT when they are officially announced. However, with the legal issues between Samsung and Apple looking like they will stretch on for a while, Nokia and Microsoft should capitalize on the time as much as they can by promoting existing products and hyping up future releases. Nokia is confident that its designs and technologies are the perfect complements for Windows Phone 8 and that they can go hand in hand without slowing down the other’s development.
