When the Surface tablet first showed up from Microsoft the welcome was not a warm one that can be blamed on the price of the unit. In a market where most of the companies are coming down with prices and offering some very powerful hardware, Microsoft snuck the Surface tablet in there, but though consumers would pay for it. In the end, Microsoft had to pay for it as the company ended up writing off millions in dollars to the failure that the Surface turned into.
That, however, did not stop the company from moving forward and created a second generation Surface 2 tablet and bringing that to the market. The welcome might have been a little warmer this time around, but Microsoft is still struggling to make sure consumers remember they are in the hunt. Recent reports suggest that Microsoft is ready to bring the Surface 2 to the market with 4G LTE support. According to some online sources, the Surface 2 with 4G LTE support has made its way through the FCC this week and usually that is one of the last steps before hitting the store shelf.
The documents that are included in the FCC certification, the company explains how the Surface 2 is going to connect to wireless networks much in the same way that smartphones do currently. Companies are required to submit paperwork to the FCC detailing how the new product is going to connect to existing telecommunications network throughout the country. Microsoft did mention they were going to launch the Surface 2 4G LTE model last year, but that was not the case. The new documents did not reveal anything new about the device, so it might have just been due to a delay in production.
This would be the first Surface tablet to come with 4G LTE technology and the new product is also in the same category as the iPad. The iPad Air from Apple currently dominates the tablet market in more ways than one, but this Surface 2 option will give consumers a little something to think about when looking to upgrade. Microsoft did not mention any exact launch date for the device, but the company does have a BUILD event each year and maybe that would be the best time to showcase the new device.
