Apple iPhone and iPad users will finally get to access their Xbox Live accounts for the first time since Microsoft launched a new app today. The new app called, My Xbox Live, allows users to edit their avatars, post achievements and chat with friends that are linked to user Xbox Live accounts. You can also get gaming news, tips and get the latest information about new apps from the company. Windows Phone users have been able to do these things with the app for a while and now Apple users can finally do the same. There was not information released as to why it took so long for the company to come up with the app for iOS.
Apple users that want to download the app will notice that the new app will put a Windows Phone-style user interface on their phone, but that is not likely to bother many people. When the app is installed, a horizontal bar fits across the screen which includes icons that you can find in the Windows Phone 7 app. There is also a little advertisement-style browser based demo of the Windows Phone user interface that can be used from Android or iOS powered devices. The company thinks this could lure potential customers to the new Windows Phone handsets.
The company launched the free mobile app and the director of programming for Xbox Live said, “This free app will allow you to stay connected to the Xbox Live community when you are away from your console,” in a blog post today. The app is universal for iOS and allows users to read and send messages to friends, manage your friends list and invite friends, change your avatar, edit your full Live profile, view and compare achievements you have with your friends. Users with any iOS 4.3 or higher device like the iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.
Microsoft also launched a new version of the Xbox dashboard this week. The company also launched an “Xbox Companion for Windows Phone app” that works together with the new Xbox 360 firmware that was recently updated. The app gives users remote control of services like music and video and allows a user to browse music, movies, TV shows, games and apps. Users can also see the recent activity of the friends they have on their Xbox Live profile.
