The Motorola Atrix 2 has finally been released, debuting at a retail price of $49 at select AT&T authorized retailers with a new two-year activation on the 4G AT&T mobile broadband network. This marks the lowest launch-day retail price of any dual core 4G handset AT&T has ever released. As such, the Atrix 2 launches at a retail price over $100 lower than its predecessor, the Motorola  Atrix  4G did earlier this year. However, there are several similarities that the Atrix 2 borrows from its first generation ancestor. Just like the original Atrix, the Motorola Atrix 2 4G Android handset was designed to be several devices in one.

Motorola developed what they are calling their WebTop application, which allows the Motorola Atrix 2 the ability to port into Motorola’s Lapdock or HD Station, thereby transforming into a laptop, desktop or multimedia center. The Motorola Atrix 2, through the WebTop application, uses a full Firefox PC web browser. The Motorola Atrix 2 can also snap into an in-vehicle GPS dock which allows for hands-free GPS navigation through integration with Google voice. Hands-free voice-activated web surfing is also provided.

AT&T is currently working on providing Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband access which will speed up their 4G network, and currently AT&T promises speeds up to four times faster on their current 4G network than their 3G wireless platform. As with many second generation 4G Android smartphones, the Motorola Atrix 2 comes with Android’s 2.3.5 Gingerbread operating system out-of-the-box. Looking very similar to its seven-month-old predecessor, the Motorola Atrix 2 arrives in similar smartphone fashion; a rectangular, black, slab form factor.

The handset measures 4.96 x 2.59 x 0.40 inches (126 x 66 x 10 mm), and weighs 5.18 oz (147 g), average in size and slightly heavier than the 4.3 ounce 4G smartphone average. The display has grown from 4 to 4.3 inches, and supports 16 million color saturation with 540 x 960 pixel resolution. Almost a requisite now with 4G handsets, the screen is a multi-capacitive touchscreen with light sensor and a proximity sensor built into the display, and supports multitouch gestures.

Dual cameras are built in, and come in the form of a rear facing eight megapixel camcorder and front facing chat cam which also provides for video calls. The 1750 mAh battery on the Atrix 2 delivers 8 1/2 hours of continuous talk time on a single battery charge, and the software set includes a 3-D graphics hardware accelerator, dual core 1.0 GHz processor, and 1.0 GB of RAM memory.  Buy the Motorola Atrix 2 starting at only $49.99!!
