Motorola Atrix 2 Review: Motorola unveiled the Atrix 4G at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January of this year, and the handset debuted on AT&T’s 4G network in February. Rumored to be released as the Olympus, the Atrix 4G arrived as one of the first Nvidia Tegra 2 dual core handsets, and set into motion the dual core avalanche we have seen since. Declaring the Atrix 4G would change the way that smartphones are designed, the handset offers multifunctionality as an 11.6 inch screen Notebook, a Desktop PC and Multimedia Center, and an in-vehicle GPS Device. The second iteration of that device, the Motorola Atrix 2, delivers that same versatile functionality, but upgrades have been made to the camera set, screen size and OS.
Google’s Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread operating system is on board, and the handset hit the mobile marketplace on October 16, joining its predecessor on the AT&T 4G network. The handset measures 4.96 x 2.59 x 0.40 inches (126 x 66 x 10 mm), and weighs 5.18 ounces (147 g). The screen is 4.30 inches, and delivers 540 x 960 pixel resolution at 240 pixels per inch. 16 million colors are supported, and the display is navigated with capacitive, multitouch gestures. A light sensor is built in to automatically adjust the display according to the prevalent amount of light hitting the screen, and a proximity sensor is onboard for auto shut off.
Battery life from the 1785 mAh cell runs 8.50 hours talk time, and 15 days standby. The processor onboard the Atrix 2 is a Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 chip set, a dual core 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor, with a PowerVR SGX540 graphics processor. 1.0 GB of RAM memory and 8.0 GB of storage are offered, and a microSD slot is available for storage expansion.
Dual cameras show up on the Atrix 2 in the form of a rear 8.0 MP camcorder and front 0.3 MP chat cam that also provides support for video calls. That rear camera is equipped with an LED flash, auto focus, special effects package, white balance and background scenes. It shoots video at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (1080p HD), and records at 30 frames per second. The onboard music player supports all major file formats and allows for filtering by artist, album and play list, and a YouTube video player is pre-installed. An FM radio, loudspeaker, 3.5 mm headset and audio out jack are also on board, and Facebook and Twitter apps have been pre-loaded as well.
