Amazon is the largest retailer online by far, and even compared against brick-and-mortar institutions, is one of largest in the world. One of the many Amazon offerings is a wireless store, and the Amazon Wireless smartphone bestseller list is an excellent gauge of a handset’s popularity or lack thereof. Recently the Motorola Droid Razr HD 4G Android smartphone running on the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE system received a drastic retail price reduction down to $0.01 on contract, and has ridden that nearly free price tag all the way up to #5 on the Amazon smartphone bestseller list as of this writing. The same day we wrote this, the Droid Razr HD disappeared from the Amazon Wireless site. It has returned as of April 1, and now sports a price tag of $19.99. Not as pretty as the penny price tag, but still super affordable.
The handset was released in October of last year around the same time as the Droid Razr MAXX HD, upgrading battery capacity a full 42% over the original Droid Razr 4G. The handset was upgraded from Ice Cream Sandwich to the Jelly Bean 4.1 operating system in December of last year, and was the first in the Droid Razr lineup to offer a 720P display. NFC wireless connectivity is offered out-of-the-box, and scratch resistant Gorilla Glass, a DuPont Kevlar back plate, aircraft grade aluminum framing and a splash-proof nanocoating on the phone make for a very rugged and durable handset.
Wafer thin at 0.33 inches (8.4 mm), Verizon’s Droid Razr HD nonetheless offers an oversized, extended life 2,530 mA battery which delivers 16.0 hours of talk time and 20.0 hours of music streaming from a single charge. 10.0 hours of video playback is also possible from a full battery charge, and standby time runs approximately 11.9 days. Web surfers can browse the Internet for up to 6.0 hours with 4G LTE speeds, but that large battery does not make the Droid Razr HD overly bulky or heavy, and the handset weighs 5.15 ounces (146 g).
The 8.0 megapixel camcorder/1.3 megapixel chat cam camera combo from previous Droid Razr handsets has returned, and video capture runs 1,080P HD resolution with that rear facing camera. The chat cam can also offers video call support, and the Chrome for Android mobile web browser has been pre-installed. The display on board the handset runs a large 4.0 inches, delivering a resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels. That Super AMOLED display delivers more than 16 million individual colors at a rate of 312 pixels per inch, and DLNA wireless video out is present.
In the Droid Razr HD hardware package, a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 handles device operations, built around a dual core 1.5 GHz Krait central processor. Graphics are handled exclusively by an Adreno 225 GPU,and 1.0 GB of RAM system memory is on board. The Droid Razr HD contains 16 GB of built-in data storage space, but offers a microSD slot for storage expansion.
