Offering an ultra-skinny body and impressive hardware package, the Motorola Droid Ultra began receiving a boost up to the Android 4.4 KitKat OS just a couple of days after Christmas last year in the United States. That late holiday season present did not efficiently release to some Droid Ultra 4G owners, so Verizon has pulled the launch for now. When the compatibility issues have been resolved, Big Red said they will re-release the Android 4.4 operating system, probably 4.4.2, aiming for January or February of this year.
The Motorola DROID ULTRA is available for a reduced sale price now starting at $19.99 – $649.99.
The ultra in the handset’s name is used to refer to the ultra-slim profile the Droid Ultra boasts. Tapered corners and steep curves grace the body, which gets slimmer towards the bottom of the handset. A durable Kevlar fiber coating makes up the back plate, with a rugged layer of scratch resistant Gorilla Glass protecting the display. The phone measures just 7.18 mm (0.28 inches) in thickness, making it one of the slimmest smartphones ever built.
Anchoring the hardware package is a unique chip set Motorola is calling the X8 Mobile Computing System. This allows for 8 separate processing cores to share operating duties, which actually speeds up the user interface for the Motorola Droid Ultra owner. A language processing core is on board and provides “always on” access and Touchless Control, responding to your voice commands even when it is in standby mode.
The handset also encourages smart battery usage and extended life through light and proximity sensors built into the display, and also by offering an Active Display. This feature only uses a minimal part of your display to notify you of incoming messages and other alerts, and this helps the slimmest 2,130 mA battery on board the Motorola Droid Ultra handset offer better than double the average battery performance of any smartphone. A full 28.0 hours of all-around usage is provided after a full battery charge, as well as two weeks of standby battery power.
As light as it is slim, the Motorola Droid Ultra weighs just 137 g (4.83 ounces), much lighter than other phones with a 5.0 inch True HD 720P display. That screen boasts more than 16 million independent colors, with the Droid Ultra 4G drawing its power from a dual core 1.7 GHz CPU and a versatile and powerful quad core graphics processor. 16 GB of built-in storage is present, as is 2.0 GB of RAM memory. The rear facing 10.0 megapixel shooter provides video capture at 1,080P HD resolution and 60 frames per second, and joins a front facing chat cam in the handset’s camera combo.
