When the Motorola Atrix 4G Android handset came out earlier this year, Motorola claimed that the versatility of the device would change the way all future smartphones are made. With the ability to function as an 11.6 inch laptop, desktop PC and multimedia center, as well as a hands-free in-vehicle GPS device, the Atrix  4G definitely did present a host of options that previous Android handsets had not effectively mastered. However, the prediction that this design versatility would make its way to the rest of the mobile marketplace did not occur. That did not keep Motorola from releasing a second such device with the same unique versatility, and that device is the Motorola Atrix 2 4G Android handset.

The handset is roughly the same size and weighs slightly more, at 5.18 ounces. However, though the Atrix 2 is approximately the same size physically as the Motorola  Atrix  4G, this new smartphone delivers a 4.3 inch display as opposed to the 4.0 inches its predecessor possessed. The same 540 x 960 pixel display is offered, but the Atrix 2, released October 16, delivers that display with 16 million color support and at 240 pixels per inch. The original Atrix was one of the first Android handsets with a dual core processor, and the Atrix 2 follows suit, with a dual core 1 GHz Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 processing chip and 1.0 GB of RAM memory, and adds the PowerVR SGX 540 graphics processing system.

8 GB of onboard storage are built-in, and that total can be ramped up to 32 GB via the on board microSD slot. The rear facing camcorder has received a 60% upgrade in definition, going from 5.0 megapixels to 8.0 megapixels. Recording resolution has also been ramped up 50%, and the new Atrix 2 records video in 1080P HD as opposed to the previous 720P resolution offered by the Atrix. The same front facing chat cam returns and also provides video call capabilities. The Atrix 2 returns to the AT&T 4G network which offers speeds up to four times faster than AT&T’s 3G wireless platform. The Atrix 2 handset starts at $49 at select AT&T authorized retailers with a two-year activation.

Both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless access options are presented, and the Motorola Atrix 2 also has the ability to function as a mobile hotspot for multiple wireless devices. What has also returned is the ability to operate as an entry-level notebook in tandem with the Motorola Lapdock, and the ability to operate as a desktop PC or multimedia center using the Motorola HD Station.  Buy the Motorola Atrix 2 4G starting at only $49.99!!
